Garda investigates “melee involving two rival factions” in the town of Co Limerick

Gardaí is investigating a number of violent unrest in the town of Kilmallock, County Limerick, involving a number of families in conflict.

Rival groups clashed with weapons, windows were smashed in a house and cars were damaged, during the melee last Sunday.

A number of videos circulating online claim to show groups of men smashing windows in a town house, however, it is believed the wrong house has been targeted.

Another video shows a large crowd gathered in an area of ​​town and a loud bang is heard.

In this video, a woman asks another woman who watches the crowd, “Are there guns over there?

A woman can be heard telling a child to leave the area “because you are too young to watch this”.

Video shows Gardaí at the scene and a uniformed officer trying to calm the crowd.

When asked to comment, the Garda press office responded on Wednesday that there was “no corresponding report” to the shots fired at Kilmallock last Sunday.

Garda’s spokesperson added that no shots had been “recorded on our system yet”.

However, gardaí confirmed that they responded to the scene of a “brawl involving two rival factions” last Sunday.

Local guards “asked for help” and a number of guards units from neighboring districts as well as armed guards were deployed in the town.

The source said Gardaí was examining CCTV cameras in Kilmallock, as well as several videos shared on social media, in an attempt to identify those involved.

The violence began around 8 p.m. Sunday evening and lasted for several hours.

Since then, Gardai “actively patrols” the city in an attempt to control tensions between rival families “and to try to curb these activities”.

A Garda spokesperson said: “A number of Garda units, including the Regional Armed Support Unit, responded to public order incidents around 8 p.m. on Sunday 12 September 2021 in the region of Kilmallock in County Limerick. ”

“The situation calmed down after a while, by the local guard and no arrests were made.

“No injury reports have been made at this point and a number of incidents are under active investigation.” A local source said tensions have been mounting between rival groups in the city for several days, culminating in a number of incidents over the weekend.

Another video, which was watched and examined, shows a number of people armed with sticks, shovels and hurleys involved in clashes in different parts of the city.
