Henrico County Resumes Community Cleanups in September with Some Changes


HENRICO COUNTY, Virginia (WWBT) – Henrico County has announced that the community clean-up program will resume in September. The program will also include some changes aimed at controlling costs and preventing inappropriate dumping.

Eight cleanings are scheduled for this fall starting September 11.

The Community Cleanup program offers a free day of curbside bulky waste collection, including:

  • Mattress
  • Appliances
  • Electronic
  • Small amounts of garden debris

Community Revitalization, which manages the program with the Department of Utilities, announced changes:

  • Notifications: A brochure will be mailed to residents approximately two weeks in advance to inform them of the date of service in their neighborhood.
  • Budget: Cleanups will be scheduled in the fall and spring and will continue if and when funding is available. Authorities expect to perform 14 to 16 cleanings per year. Each area should be cleaned every three to four years.
  • Calendar: As in the past, areas will be scheduled for cleaning based on criteria that take into account the age of homes and residents, participation in the county’s Real Estate Advantage program, above-average code violations for the area and other factors.
  • Pickup criteria: Items not acceptable for pickup include household garbage, logs, tree stumps and root balls; tires, batteries and other automotive parts; limbs more than 4 inches thick or more than 4 feet in length; loose leaves; branches longer than 4 feet; stacked items exceeding 8 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet; objects or debris from demolition or eviction from construction; household waste such as air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers; hazardous or liquid waste; paint and drywall; propane or oxygen tanks; oil, gasoline and diesel fuel, pesticides and antifreeze; lawn care equipment; glass, mirrors and windows; and any object on private property not placed by the roadside.

Henrico also offers a bulky waste pickup service which is available to residents across the county on request for $ 67.
