Wasim Akram and Sanjay Manjrekar criticize Mohammad Rizwan’s T20 batting approach

Legendary Pakistan national cricketer player Wasim Akram and former India national cricket team player Sanjay Manjrekar have slammed Pakistani wicket-beater star’s batting approach Mohammad Rizwan in T20 cricket.

On Sunday, September 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan lost the 2022 Asian Cup Final by 23 runs to the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. Team Pakistan’s batting unit faced heavy criticism after the loss as the required run rate kept increasing during the chase and the batters were not playing the offensive mark of cricket.

Speaking of the No. 1 ranked hitter in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rating, Mohammad Rizwan, he scored 55 runs on 49 balls before being sacked by Wanindu Hasaranga in the 17th inning.

Speaking on Star Sports, quoted by Hindustan Times, Akram said:

“At the start of the tournament, I said that the fly-half would not be wrong but would struggle in games like these. That’s exactly what happened today.

Sanjay Manjrekar, during the same discussion, said that ‘anchoring’ in T20 cricket is overrated. He added that Rizwan batting at a strike rate of 104 in the 16th is a poor approach in T20 cricket.

“I’m very skeptical about ‘anchoring’ in T20 cricket. It’s overrated because you have 10 wickets and 20 overs. I like India’s new model and Sri Lanka had no one who played the role of anchor.

“It’s unfair to choose a guy, but he (Rizwan) is a shining example of Pakistan’s approach. You can’t have Rizwan at bat at 104 batting rate in the 16th when you’re chasing 171,” Sanjay Manjrekar said in response.

Akram further said that he criticized Rizwan for his slow batting in the game against Hong Kong and was attacked on social media for giving his opinion.

“He (Rizwan) had done the same against Hong Kong if you remember. I critiqued it, which was a healthy critique. And people attacked me on social media. The Pakistanis said that I did not support Rizwan.

“If you want my opinion, I will give you the fair and direct opinion. I’m not the guy who will lie about what I see. To me, black is black and white is white,” Akram said.
